“Lady Mist” – February 1722
Lady Mist is an original pirate ship sculpture by Jordan Dimitrov, inspired by a dramatic maritime story set near Nassau in New Providence in February 1722.
The morning sun filtered gently through the sails of a modest two-masted merchant vessel making its slow journey toward port. Suddenly, the peaceful silence was shattered by the anxious ringing of a bell. Shouts rang across the deck, while sharp whistle blasts signaled danger.
From behind, a dark and powerful sloop advanced quickly toward the ship’s stern.
Warning cannon shots crashed into the sea. Towering sprays of water rose across the decks of the Lady Mist. Above the approaching vessel, a black flag snapped violently in the wind.
The message was clear: pirates.
The Trap
Every sailor who traveled these waters knew the risks. The region around the Bahamian islands had become notorious for piracy. Imperial authority was weak, while remote waters offered outlaws places to hide.
As the pirates rushed forward, driven by greed and adrenaline, they failed to notice something unusual.
Suddenly, the Lady Mist turned sharply to starboard and exposed her full broadside.
Her gun ports swung open.
The attackers had made a fatal mistake.
The small merchant ship had already revealed its true purpose. A devastating barrage of cannon fire erupted from her side, tearing through the pirate sloop in a storm of flame and destruction.
Her powerful bombard cannons reduced the attacking vessel to wreckage within moments.
The Legend of Lady Mist
Soon, stories spread from the Bahamas to the eastern Caribbean about a mysterious ghost ship that hunted pirates.
Some claimed that its captain was not human at all. According to the legend, she was a terrifying sea creature—a mermaid with fire instead of hair.
But legends often grow from misunderstood truths.
The “mermaid” was said to be real—not a creature of myth, but a fierce red-haired Irish woman born around 1700.
Her name was Anne Bonny, one of history’s most famous female pirates.
Active between 1718 and 1720, Anne Bonny was eventually captured and sentenced to death. Historical records do not clearly reveal what happened to her afterward, and her fate became part of the mystery surrounding her life.
Jordan Dimitrov’s Interpretation
In Jordan Dimitrov’s telling, Anne Bonny’s knowledge of piracy became invaluable. Instead of facing the gallows, she was secretly commissioned by English authorities to fight the very criminals she had once sailed beside.
She was placed in command of the Lady Mist, a powerful warship designed to lure pirates into their own destruction.
This story forms the inspiration for Jordan Dimitrov’s original sculpture.
Lady Mist is not a replica of a documented historical vessel. It is an artistic interpretation of a maritime legend. Jordan combines the drama of the Age of Sail with his own vision of a mysterious ship, its hidden purpose, and the woman behind its legend.
